3 Tips to Keep Up with Oral Care When You Are Sick

Oral Care when Sick | Harleysville PA

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), flu season peaks between December and March but can hang around until May.

We hope you have made it this far without getting sick! But if you are currently suffering with a bad cold or flu, it’s important not to neglect your oral health care.

Harleysville, PA dentist Dr. William McMaugh would like to share a few simple things you can do to keep up with your oral health care while you are ill:

  1. Keep up with Your Oral Hygiene – We know that when you’re sick, the last thing you want to do is get out of bed to brush and floss. But your oral hygiene is just as important when you’re sick as it is when you’re well – perhaps more so. Plus, brushing and flossing may actually help you feel better because your mouth feels clean and fresh.
  2. Stay Hydrated – Dry mouth is common when you’re sick. It’s not only uncomfortable, but a lack of saliva (nature’s mouthwash!) can also lead to cavities. Drink lots of water and suck on sugar-free cough drops to help promote the natural flow of saliva.
  3. Choose the Right Fluids – Water is the best choice because it keeps you hydrated. Sports drinks are helpful in replacing lost electrolytes, but drink them sparingly, because they’re often loaded with sugar. Drinking warm tea can be very soothing, but avoid using too much lemon as it’s acidic and can damage teeth over time.

Arranging an Appointment When You Feel Better

We certainly don’t want to add to your troubles by stressing you out about dental care when you’re not well. But following these simple steps can at least prevent your oral health from deteriorating just because you’re sick. When you’re feeling better, please call Harleysville, PA dentist Dr. William McMaugh to arrange your next dental cleaning.

Be well!

Dear Friends, Due to Covid-19, we have made a lot of changes to the office. We have put in new negative pressure rooms with HEPA filters to keep us all safer as well as many other protocols. We are also slowly catching up on our hygiene appointments. Having just opened up for hygiene the beginning of July, and new protocols, it will take us a while, though. Thank you for your patience during these trying times.
Please stay safe and call us if you have any dental issues or questions.  Take care.
