If your child participates in any sports-related activity, they should be wearing a protective mouth guard. Whether they play soccer or participates in gymnastics, a custom mouth guard will help protect them from dental injury.

If your child needs a custom mouth guard, please contact your pediatric dentist in Harleysville, PA.

Custom Mouth Guards Reduce Traumatic Brain Injuries

A 2014 study published in Science Daily suggests that a well-fitting, customized mouth guard can also help minimize the risk of traumatic brain injuries. The study followed two groups of high school football players; one that wore over-the-counter mouth guards, and one that wore customized mouth guards. All players wore the same type of helmets.

The study showed that of the athletes who wore custom mouth guards, only 3.6 percent suffered concussion injuries compared to 8.3 percent for those who wore OTC mouth guards. Previous studies suggest that custom guards help minimize the risk of serious injury because they limit movement caused by a blow to the jaw by stabilizing the head and neck.

Other Ways Custom Mouth Guards Protect Your Child

The primary function of mouth guards, of course, is to protect teeth. Customized mouth-guards are about twice as thick as the store-bought versions, so they protect your child’s teeth better. They’re also made using impressions of your child’s teeth custom guards conforms perfectly to the contours of your child’s jaw.

Other benefits of choosing a custom mouth guard for your child are:

  • Help children avoid chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth
  • Limit the risk of injuries to your child’s lips and tongue
  • Last longer than OTC mouth guards

Dear Friends, Due to Covid-19, we have made a lot of changes to the office. We have put in new negative pressure rooms with HEPA filters to keep us all safer as well as many other protocols. We are also slowly catching up on our hygiene appointments. Having just opened up for hygiene the beginning of July, and new protocols, it will take us a while, though. Thank you for your patience during these trying times.
Please stay safe and call us if you have any dental issues or questions.  Take care.
