Why Your Child’s Oral Health Habits are Important

If you’re a parent, we don’t have to tell you that raising kids is a lot of work! There are many responsibilities, but if oral health isn’t a priority for your child, it should be.

Have you ever had a mild toothache that left you feeling irritable and out of sorts? But, as an adult, you know that all you have to do is call your dentist who will address the problem and provide the relief you need.

But imagine you’re a little child with the same uncomfortable toothache. If they are too young to understand what pain is, they not only hurt, but they may be confused and not understand what’s happening to them or why. When your child can’t tell you what’s wrong, the result is that many areas of their life will be impacted:

  • Nutrition may suffer because eating is uncomfortable
  • They may pass up playtime because they don’t feel well
  • Learning can become a problem because tooth pain makes it difficult for them to concentrate

Helping Your Child Enjoy a Full Life

If you follow some basic rules, oral health care for your child is not complicated, but you do need to be proactive. You should start with oral hygiene for your child right after birth by wiping their gums gently with a soft cloth or gauze pad to remove milk or formula buildup.

When their first tooth makes its appearance, arrange for them to visit the dentist. First visits, or “happy visits” as they’re sometimes called are typically low stress, and your dentist will probably use much of the time to educate you about proper oral care for your child.

Dear Friends, Due to Covid-19, we have made a lot of changes to the office. We have put in new negative pressure rooms with HEPA filters to keep us all safer as well as many other protocols. We are also slowly catching up on our hygiene appointments. Having just opened up for hygiene the beginning of July, and new protocols, it will take us a while, though. Thank you for your patience during these trying times.
Please stay safe and call us if you have any dental issues or questions.  Take care.
