Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

Children's Dentistry in Harleysville PA, WIlliam T McMaugh

The big day is here!

It’s time for your child’s first dental appointment. We usually recommend that kids start visiting us about the age of three. By this point, your child has most of their teeth in and they have the skills to take instruction and sit in the dental chair. They also have a natural curiosity, which makes new environments fun and exciting!

Up to this point, we’ll have discussed early childhood dental care. This is your child’s moment to visit the office, go for a ride in the dental chair, and get their teeth counted.

The First Visit

During the first visit, we won’t try to do a cleaning or a complete examination. Most children don’t have any dental problems at this age (and, of course, if you do have any concerns, please let us know right away!), and the main purpose of this visit is to help your child become accustomed to the dental office.

Dr. McMaugh and our entire team are kind, friendly, and fun people, and we’ll make sure that your child has a positive first experience. So many people these days have some level of dental anxiety, and by starting your child off in a positive and gentle manner, we can help alleviate those fears so your child feels comfortable visiting the dentist for a lifetime!

We’ll talk to both you and your child about home dental hygiene and help your child develop a voice in his or her own dental care. Building habits now will pay off with better dental health for the long run.

Catering To Kids

We know how to relate to kids and use kid-friendly language to explain what we are doing and the instruments we use. Apprehension is natural – this is a completely new and unfamiliar place, after all, with new and unfamiliar sights, sounds, and smells. We’ll take time to build a trusting relationship with your child before we attempt to provide treatments like cleanings or fluoride application.
