It’s that time of year when parents everywhere are busy getting their kids ready for the first day of school. You have all the necessary school supplies, your child has picked out their outfit, and you have a cupboard full of healthy snacks for lunches.

But your child isn’t 100% ready for school unless they have had a thorough dental exam. Children with a healthy smile are a lot happier and more productive in school than those with poor oral health.

How Oral Health Impacts Your Child

Dental caries (cavities) are the most common chronic childhood illness. An estimate provided by the National Institutes of Health indicates that 23% of children between the ages of 2 and 11 have untreated decay.

Poor oral health can have a profound effect on a child’s health and well-being. Dental problems lead to:

  • Difficulty chewing healthy, nutritious foods
  • Absences from school due to dental pain
  • Impaired speech development
  • Inability to focus and difficulty completing schoolwork
  • Reluctance to smile and interact with other kids

Prevention Is the Key

We can’t say it often enough – prevention is the key to a happy and healthy smile. When you bring your child in for their exam, we will carefully check their teeth and note any changes since their last visit.

With routine exams, we can stay a step ahead of dental disease that can have a profound impact on your child’s life. If we find a small problem, we can immediately correct it before it becomes a big problem!

During your exam, your dentist may recommend a fluoride application to strengthen and protect teeth. Another excellent preventive treatment for kids is dental sealants. We apply the sealant to the uneven surfaces of teeth to “seal out” cavity-causing bacteria.
