Our team respects your child as the unique individual they are, and we will do everything possible to help them see visits to the dentist as a positive, enjoyable experience.

Gentle, Compassionate Care

We know that a visit to the dentist can be a little scary for a young child. An unfamiliar setting, new faces, and lots of strange-looking machines can be pretty overwhelming! But you can relax knowing that Dr. McMaugh has a gift for understanding the needs of children and providing the gentle care they need.

Our entire team loves to help start kids off with a positive view of dentistry that will last a lifetime. There are too many adults whose long-term dental care has been impacted by a negative childhood experience. We think this is unfortunate and completely unnecessary.

Why Baby Teeth Are Important

Giving your child the gift of great oral health is one of the most important things you can do for them. We like to see your children starting around three years of age because at this point, they usually have all their baby teeth and dental development really takes off.

Do you wonder why it’s necessary to start them off at such an early age? After all, their baby teeth will come out anyway, so what difference does it make?

These first few years are a critical time for your child’s dental health care. Baby teeth are the building blocks that affect the development of their permanent teeth, so it is essential to keep them healthy.

Another important purpose of early visits is to allow Dr. McMaugh and our team to get to know your child and help them feel comfortable with us. We refer to these as “happy visits” because we show kids the positive, fun side of dental visits before they need any significant care.

Preventative Treatments for Healthy Teeth

If we find a cavity in a baby tooth, we need to fill it as quickly as possible to preserve the tooth and your child’s long-term oral health. Without prompt treatment, your child may lose a tooth too soon, putting them at risk for alignment problems as their permanent teeth start to emerge.

Regular dental exams and cleanings with our gentle hygienist are as important for your child as they are for you. Depending on your child's needs, we may also recommend fluoride treatments to keep their teeth strong and healthy.

Application of dental sealants is another effective way to protect your child’s teeth from cavities. We may recommend sealants if their teeth are prone to cavities or if they have molars with very deep grooves and uneven surfaces.

If your child is older and has their permanent teeth, they may also benefit from the application of dental sealants. This extra layer of protection is especially helpful during the teen years when kids are more likely to develop cavities.

Prompt Care When Your Child Needs It Most

We want you to have peace of mind in knowing that we are always here for you and your family. Kids of all ages are prone to dental emergencies, and we will make every effort to see them the same day if possible. If an emergency occurs after hours, Dr. McMaugh is just a phone call away.

Our entire team would love to welcome you and your child to our Harleysville dental family. Please contact our office, and we’ll be happy to arrange a convenient appointment for you and your child to stop by for a visit and to meet our team.
